Nintendo 3DS: British Optician warns of permanent damage to children’s eyes
It is only a couple of days now before Nintendo are set to announce the full details of their new 3DS console. The new device has already met with some criticism following the warning that Nintendo put on its website about young children’s eyes.
Now a British eye expert has told TechRadar that the reason that Nintendo put warnings on its site could be to do with children’s ‘critical eyesight period’. The optician Richard Pakey added “This is arguably between the ages of 2 to 6 and at this stage children are very much in the developmental process visually, and any persuasions optically could indeed have a negative impact permanently.”
But there is a concern that the technology could affect all age groups not just the under six year olds. Pakey added There is a grey area surrounding the potential eye health issues caused by 3D, this is concerning ALL age groups, not just under 6 year olds.” “Our own Professional body – the General Optical Council (GOC) cannot issue clinical guidance for 3D eyewear until the release of ‘prescription’ 3D eyewear which is due later this year.”
I was thinking of buying my two children a 3DS to replace their ageing DSi’s, but with all this uncertainty will probably wait and see what other advice may come out after the device is released. But surely a company like Nintendo wouldn’t risk the health of children?
